On June 9, the list of winners of the 16th Guanghua Engineering Science and Technology Award was officially announced, and Professor Yang Min from the Research Center for Eco-Environmental Sciences of the Chinese Academy of Sciences was honored with this prestigious award. The Guanghua Engineering Science and Technology Award was initiated by the Chinese Academy of Engineering in 1996 and is presented biennially to recognize experts who have made outstanding achievements in engineering science, technology, and management. It is the highest award in China’s engineering field established by the social sector.
Professor Yang Min has long been engaged in research on water quality risks, particularly environmental biological risk control technologies. He has led national drinking water quality surveys spanning four Five-Year Plan periods, developed efficient detection methods and equipment for typical harmful microorganisms such as harmful algae and pathogens, and invented key technologies such as light-adjusting algae inhibition and odor control, and enhanced hydrolysis of antibiotics. He has broken through major engineering challenges including in-situ regulation of large-scale water source quality based on natural processes and source control of antibiotic resistance transmission in pharmaceutical wastewater. His achievements have been applied to the construction and operation of nearly 50 projects, directly supporting the formulation of national and industry standards such as the Standards for Drinking Water Quality and the Standard Examination Methods for Drinking Water, as well as WHO guidelines including the Guidelines for the Control and Management of Wastes and Wastewater from Antibiotic Production. His work has also provided critical scientific and technological support for drinking water safety in megacities such as Beijing and Shanghai, the water source of the South-to-North Water Diversion Middle Route Project, and the scientific response to major odor events in Wuxi, Qinhuangdao, Yuhang, and other areas, benefiting multiple countries along the “Belt and Road.” He has received numerous important awards, including the First and Second Prizes of the National Science and Technology Progress Award, the Second Prize of the National Natural Science Award, the Outstanding Science and Technology Achievement Award of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Special Prize for Science and Technology Progress of the China Urban Water Supply and Drainage Association, the Hou Debang Chemical Science and Technology Achievement Award, and the Regional Award of the World Academy of Sciences (TWAS).
